is there an easy instrument to turn down a peice of rod.
I have a 20mm diameter peice of rod down to 12mm but i gotta have around 40mm left at the end what have to be taperd from 20 to 18.
I dont want to use a faceing tool going back and forward for hours getting 20mm to 12mm. Is there a better tool for the chore?

You could set a travelling steady to assist in using heavier cuts.
You wouldn't be using a facing tool, you are cutting along the axis.
Another mode would be to rough down the rod diameter in the 3- jaw chuck, disappearing just the end you are contraction full size, and the rest larger by around 2mm. Do a bit, move it out of the chuck further, do some more, etc. Pre- drilling the centre hole can help to stabilise the rod next to the tailstock, the further you have it protruding from the chuck.
Finally, put the rod between centres, and nearly finish- size it. Turn it around, and rough out the taper extremity. Turn it again, and finish turn the 12mm. section. If it is long, you may still need to use a steady. Turn it again, and finish turn the taper.
Long delicate jobs always present problems to electrical device in a lathe.
