Metal lathe option, and tips on buying Help Me!!?

Im new to machining im taking classes to get certified within lathe, mill, cnc, cad,. Anyways i have a chance to buy a 1973 Clausing 10 inch beside a 50 inch bed. Or also he has a Logan from around the same time thats a 12in by 55inch bed. I be wondering which would be the better buy they both look reallly nice and well kept in the pics. Just wondering if anyone have some tips for what to look out for or which one they recommend. Also i can get either one for around $900 movable.. Any tips or hints on buying a lathe would be nice and very helpful to me

Those are both feature brands. Of the two, one thing to consider, no matter what the size of contraption you buy, the time will come that you will wish for a larger one. You need to help yourself to someone along who knows the machines and let him check them out robotically. In addition to the options adjectives ready mentioned, are the chuck and tail spindle bearings dutiful, the gear box/s full of oil and free of wear metals? Are the motors wired for your shop? These are some examples of what should be looked for. There are many more.
Are they skilful of cutting threads? Then what is the Maximum rpm .
When using carbide inserts higher rpms are fundamentally useful. Also what type chuck are available? 3jaw 4 jaw, collet and will it come beside a face plate so you can machine between centers.
