I have a Jet mini lathe...the model that this one replaced. I replaced it with a larger lathe. It's a perfectly appropriate lathe and even has an available bed extension so you can work on pieces up to 40" long. The only entry this one doesn't have is variable speed. Not a big contract for a chess set, but for larger items it would be useful. It's another $80 on top of the one you're looking at. The tools are HSS (high speed steel), which scheme they're at least serviceable and will get you started. Assuming you're making a standard size chess set, a smaller set of chisels, similar to these http://www.amazon.com/PSI-Woodworking-LC…
might come in handy.
By the way, check out Craigslist within your area. There are at least 7 for public sale around the country right now.
Also, do not compare this lathe to anything you might purchase at Harbor Freight. I have stuff from Harbor Freight, but I own seen their lathe and it is serious junk.
I just bought a Midi-Lathe from sear on special for $200.00 free delivery.
I have deal with Harbor freight, what they show you or tell you around is not what you'll get, then try and contact them. They are simply a supply house and not cheap, but what they provide is cheap.
I bought a leather sewing machine from them that can hardly be used , it's a pile of crap, I didn't revise my lesson, I bought a set of lathe, wood, chisels, what a joke, you can get equal thing at Wal-Mart craft section for eight dollars, I salaried thirty with shipping. The shipping by the way be four times the price. Stay away fro Harbor Freight. Source(s): retired contractor
IDK sry.
I'm not a turner, but have a couple of pieces of Jet and they are good ability. The best turner I know recently became a Jet sale rep.
For the same $300, you can buy a pretty nice chess set.
go to sear and pick one up.
grizzly have a mini bench top lathe for 169.00 4 speeds ...10 in. x 18 in. http://www.grizzly.com you can do better on the chisels tho , you take what you pay for in turning tools... i hold paid as much as 100.00 for a single chisel...but i started out with a set similar to what you down...they also sell miniature chisel sets for small turnings...
